Harley-Davidson moves into the heart of Sturgis for 2010 rally

MILWAUKEE (April 19, 2010) – Harley-Davidson will move its 2010 rally experience to two all-new locations in the heart of Sturgis, S.D., where the Motor Company will celebrate the 70th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with customers and motorcycle enthusiasts August 6-14, 2010.

The Harley-Davidson Road Tour with the newly released 2011 Harley-Davidson® motorcycles, Genuine Motor Accessories, MotorClothes® merchandise and H.O.G.® members-only pin stop will run from Friday, Aug. 6 through Saturday, Aug. 14 at the intersection of Lazelle and 3rd streets in downtown Sturgis. All Harley-Davidson activities in Sturgis are free of charge.

Harley-Davidson demo rides for 2011 motorcycles will be available in Sturgis at a location near Interstate 90 at Exit 30. More details on the exact location, dates and hours of demo rides and other Harley-Davidson activities in Sturgis will follow in the coming weeks.

“Right smack in the middle of Sturgis seems like the ideal place for Harley-Davidson to spend the week,” said Steve Piehl, Harley-Davidson Director, Consumer Events Marketing. “We recently made a similar move to an outdoor rally experience for Daytona Bike Week this year and it was extremely popular. We listen closely to our customers and believe that they will love the new Sturgis locations for our Road Tour activities, demo rides and H.O.G. pin stop.”

In recent years, most Harley-Davidson activities for the Sturgis Rally had been located in Rapid City, S.D. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. “We really enjoyed working with the staff at the Civic Center in Rapid City and have been very pleased with the service and facility over the years,” Piehl said. “We feel that our move to Sturgis will give us the opportunity to reach significantly more rally attendees than we could in Rapid City.”

For the most up-to-date information on Harley-Davidson events at the 2010 Sturgis Rally, please visit the Experience section at www.harley-davidson.com/sturgis.

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, the only major U.S.-based motorcycle manufacturer, produces heavyweight motorcycles and a complete line of motorcycle parts, accessories and general merchandise. For more information, visit Harley-Davidson’s Web site at www.harley-davidson.com.

2010 Arizona Bike Week Review

April 26, 2010 by

Like most everything else, major motorcycle rallies have been hit by hard times. Numbers are down, people are grumpy and most of us can’t even remember what a leisure dollar is, much less spend one. But somehow, somewhere out in a blooming Arizona desert, somebody threw a party and for a few days in April everyone forgot they weren’t supposed to be having fun.

The 14th annual Arizona Bike Week, held this year from April 9 through April 18, included five warm-up “pre-rally” days that kicked off the event with signature rides, dealer hosted parties and biker queen pageant eliminations. It was a prelude to the main event, Cyclefest, which opened its doors April 14.

‘The Scorpions’ to perform Aug 13th at Sturgis Rally.

April 21, 2010 by

The German band will fill the Aug. 13 slot during the Sturgis rally, according to Rod Woodruff, campground owner.

“I think they’re giants,” Woodruff said. The band has sold more than 100 million albums, and it will be bringing its Get Your Sting and Blackout World Tour 2010 to the Black Hills. The band has announced they will retire after this tour, making their performance at the Buffalo Chip the last opportunity most will have to see them live, Woodruff said.

The Scorpions are know for hits “Rock You Like A Hurricane,” “No One Like You,” “Send Me an Angel,” “Still Loving You” and Wind of Change.”

“These are honest people who make honest music,” Woodruff said.

Woodruff said he thinks the band is a good fit for the crowd at the campground because the Scorpions expressed an interest in being able to connect with the audience.

“They want to relate and feel the buzz,” Woodruff said.

The band recently released a new album, “Sting in The Tail.” It will likely be their last studio album before retirement.

“They’re not living in the past. The best is yet to come,” Woodruff said.

Scorpions join Motley Crue, Dave Mason, Tesla, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, The Guess Who, ZZ Top, Orianthi, Kid Rock, Jason Aldean, Disturbed, Williams & Ree and The Doobie Brothers for the 2010 lineup.

Two More Magnificent £100,000 Motorbikes Line Up For Bonhams Stafford Auction

Bonhams are proud to announce the addition of two fantastic new highlights to its motorcycle auction on 25th April 2010 at The International Classic MotorCycle Show, Stafford. One is the ex-Francis Williams, Basil Keys Norton-JAP 996cc Mk1 ‘Saltdean Special’ Sprinter (estimate £90,000-100,000) and the other a 1938 Brough Superior 982cc SS100 (estimate £110,000-130,000); both are expected to attract much enthusiastic bidding on the day.

The ex-Francis Williams, Basil Keys Norton-JAP is a historic sprinting motorcycle with outstanding stature and competition pedigree. This example is the first of three Norton-JAP sprinters conceived and built by Francis J Williams and it was the machine to beat in its day. In 1959 it was sold to Basil Keys, himself a dedicated sprinting enthusiast, who went on to win many events on it with the name Basil Keys becoming synonymous with the Brighton Speed Trials. In 1959 he broke the course record at Brighton, covering the standing-start kilometre in 21.59 seconds at an average speed of 103.61mph.

Lot 445, the Brough Superior SS100 needs little introduction. Legendary superbike of motorcycling’s between-the-wars ‘Golden Age’, Brough Superior – ‘The Rolls-Royce of Motorcycles’ – was synonymous with high performance, engineering excellence and quality of finish. That such a formidable reputation was forged by a motorcycle constructed almost entirely from bought-in components says much for the publicity skills of George Brough. But if ever a machine was more than the sum of its parts, it was the Brough Superior. This example has only had four owners and is offered for sale by a Brough Superior Club copy works record card, a Tester’s Road Report and an old-style buff logbook issued in April 1955.

With over 500 lots of motorcycles and related memorabilia ranging from an 1894 Hildebrand & Wolfmuller to a 1950 ex-Ernie Thomas Velocette KTT Mk VIII, and a 1950 Vincent 998cc Series-C Rapide to a 1974 Laverda 750SFC Production Racing Motorcycle, this is an auction that should not be missed.

Ben Walker, Head of Motorcycle Department comments, “This is without a doubt one of the best line-ups of collectors’ motorcycles ever offered for sale at The International Classic Motorcycle Show. There is something for everyone, the sale encompassing all genres and areas of collecting. Given the number of important and historic machines on offer I expect the printed catalogue to become a collectors’ item in its own right!’

Visit Bonhams website for more information about the upcoming auction.
